Arsenal spent the first two-thirds of the window moving along players they needed off the books — even at the expense of paying them off — and finding a loan for Saliba, but they have now made a real signing. Back up keeper Maty Ryan is in on a loan and will likely be Arsenal’s number two for the remainder of the year.
Kapow! Out of nowhere, Maty Ryan comes to Arsenal from Brighton Hove & Albion where he made 124 appearances. This year he was superseded for the spot and Arsenal pounced to bring in some Premier League-tested talent should the worst happen to Bernd Leno.
Goalkeeper was definitely a spot that Arsenal were in need of reinforcements at and a low risk loan was an obvious solution. Despite bringing in Runarrsson, Arsenal were in need of someone else, which says a lot about that whole transfer. Even with the low cost of Runarsson, it was clear early on that he wouldn’t make it.
It hasn’t cost Arsenal too badly yet, although he didn’t perform great against Manchester City in the Carabao cup, but with the ever-present risk of Leno getting injured and Arsenal’s season being derailed, something had to change.
Technical director Edu said: “Mat is an experienced goalkeeper, a proven talent in the Premier League and has also played many internationals for Australia. Mat will further strengthen our squad with his experience and knowledge of playing at the highest level.
“Following Matt Macey’s recent move to Hibernian, Mat will provide very good competition and positive support to all our goalkeepers and we are looking forward to him integrating quickly into the set-up here at Arsenal.”
